Mysql Workbench is a tool for Database administrations, Developers etc that is used to manage your database like creating the database, tables, backup, running SQL Queries, Connecting to remote servers, etc. Mysqlworkbench is available on Windows, Linux and Mac OS.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to install setup and use Mysql workbench on ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04. You can use this tutorial to install on any Ubuntu flavor. For example Elementary OS, Lubuntu, Linux Mint, etc.
Install MySql Workbench on Ubuntu 18.04 and 16.04
In this tutorial, we'll install and configure the latest MySQL workbench on ubuntu.
You can download and install in two ways. We will cover both in this tutorial
- Download from browser
- Download from terminal
Download and install from browser
Download the MySQL workbench from the official website. you can follow the below link to download.
Select the Operating system and your OS Version. Click download
Next, Go to your downloaded directory and enter the following command. I have downloaded in the downloads directory.
cd ~/Downloads sudo dpkg -i mysql-workbench-community_8.0.15-1ubuntu18.04_amd64.deb
If you get any error during installation. Enter the following command
sudo apt install -f
Download and Install from Terminal
To install via terminal, Update the ubuntu package index and Install the Mysql Workbench from the package.
sudo apt update sudo apt-get install mysql-workbench
Connect MySQL workbench to the local MySQL server
In this section, We will show you how to connect MySQL workbench to a locally installed MySQL. Open MySQL Workbench and select connect to a database from the menu
database > connect to database
Enter your local username and password and click ok to connect.
Connect Mysql Workbench to the MySQL remote server
In this section, we will show you how to connect Mysql Workbench with a remote MySQL server using ssh key. Go to
database menu and select connect to database.
Once you select the
connect to database. The above box will appear. Now enter the required field to connect with msyql remote server
Select connection method: Standard TCP/IP over ssh
SSH Hostname - Enter your server IP address
SSH Username - Enter your server username eg: ubuntu, root
SSH Password - leave this field
SSH Key file - select your ssh file
MYSQL Hostname - 127.0.0.1
MYSQL Server port - 3306 (Mysql default port)
Username - enter MySQL username
Password - enter your MySQL password
Press ok. Now you'll be able to connect to your MySQL remote server.
